About this tool
How to use it
Type or paste your text into the box above. Every statistic updates as you type — words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and speaking time — with nothing to click and nothing to configure. Use Insert sample text to try it instantly, Clear to start over, and Copy stats to put a one-line summary of all counts on your clipboard.
What the numbers mean
A word is any run of characters separated by spaces, line breaks or tabs. CJK text (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) has no spaces between words, so each character is counted as one word instead. Characters counts everything, including spaces and line breaks; characters (no spaces) excludes whitespace. Sentences are segments ending in a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis, and paragraphs are blocks separated by line breaks. Reading time assumes the average adult silent reading speed of 200 words per minute, while speaking time assumes a natural presentation pace of 130 words per minute — handy for rehearsing a toast, a lecture or a voice-over script.
Who uses it
Writers and editors use it to hit article length targets. Students check essay requirements before submitting. SEO specialists keep titles under 60 characters and meta descriptions under 160 so they don't get truncated in search results. Social media managers verify that a post fits X/Twitter's 280-character limit, an Instagram caption's 2,200 characters, or a LinkedIn post's 3,000 characters before publishing. The keyword density panel adds a quick content check: if a filler word dominates your top five, it's a sign to rewrite.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the word counter define a "word"?
Any sequence of characters separated by whitespace counts as one word, so "well-known" is one word and "New York" is two. For CJK languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean — where words are not separated by spaces — each character is counted as one word, which matches how native counting tools behave.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. The counter is plain JavaScript running entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device, the page keeps working offline once loaded, and nothing is stored or logged.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time divides your word count by 200 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations. Both are rounded to the nearest second and shown as minutes and seconds.
Which social media and SEO limits are checked?
The tool compares your character count against seven common limits: X/Twitter posts (280), Instagram captions (2,200), Facebook posts (63,206), LinkedIn posts (3,000), SEO titles (60), meta descriptions (160) and SMS messages (160). A box turns green when your text fits and red when it exceeds the limit.
How is keyword density calculated?
Your text is lowercased and split into words with punctuation stripped. Words shorter than three characters are ignored, because they are almost always stop words like "the" or "and". Each remaining word's density is its count divided by the total number of qualifying words, shown as a percentage.
